Writing a book about the Second World War defences |
|
2010-01-28 11:49:45 |
I am writing a book about the Second World War defences (pillboxes etc.) of the Taunton Stop Line of 1940 - expanded at Creech St Michael to form an Anti-Tank Island in 1941. Does anyone have contemporary photos I could use, or memories from those times - especially from anyone in the Home Guard or involved in the construction? All photos, memories, etc. will be duly credited. Thanks. Bob, Yeovil, Somerset |

I am trying to find out about the refurbished computer scheme that is run by the CVS – I am currently working with an 18 yr old lad who really needs a computer for a course he is about to embark on. Could someone please come back to me with some information? I have a CVS phone number but it doesn’t take incoming calls! Sue, Wells, Somerset |

Rumour that there was a pill box containing enough explosives to blow up the village |
|

With reference to your appeal in the Home Guard section of the Creech St Michael website regarding a rumour that there was a pill box containing enough explosives to blow up the village. The war diary of my father's unit, the 224th Field Company R.E. has a brief note stating that "31 . 07 . 1941 Destruction of mines completed at Creech St. Michael. These mines were stored in a shed which was 9” deep in water during the winter. This was criminal folly on some ones part " This may explain the reference. Unfortunately my father is no longer alive to confirm this Brian Vowles, Bristol |

Hello Mr Creech … Creech St Michael welcomes you! I’m only aware of one B&B (Creech Barn) in Creech. There aren’t any hotels in Creech but the nearest is the Falcon at Henlade (1 mile away). Taunton has many including large chain hotels.
