Room to rent in Creech St Michael? 2011-10-31 09:53:00
Hi, I found your website and wondered if you know of anyone who has a room to rent in Creech St Michael. I work full time in Taunton. My telephone number is 07961 172258. Or do you know anywhere I could put an Advert to say I am looking for a room to rent? Many thanks
Frazer, Taunton

How can I find out the plot number at St Michael's Church for Mr Leonard Amose? 2011-10-06 08:27:52
Hilary McKay, daughter of Mr Leonard Amose who died in June 1974 - husband of Edna Stace -  like to know the actual plot number at St Michael's Church of her father  - records have been mislaid and she is trying all areas.   Hope someone can help.

Dear Jill,

Searching for plot numbers for Mr Leonard Amose.

I am conducting a complete mapping of churchyard to update an existing plan - 40% complete so far. This is a personal quest and I do have the church officers permission, with a view to publish an index of the names on the website.

The name you have been given is unfortunately inaccurate, Edna Stace was actually married to a Leonard Amos Stace. Because this difference in names had to be resolved I have several other pieces of information from the internet about Leonard and Edna, if you don't already know them. To protection the family these details will not be placed on this website in line with Data Protection guidance, unless we are given permission.

Here in the churchyard is what I have found so far – a wooden bench dedicated to the memory of “L A Stace 1917~1974”, this is located up the churchyard path around to the left under a yew tree. The lichen partially covering his name has been recently removed so you may have found this place already. The burial area East of the bench is probably my next task – possibly starting next week.

Don't build up your hopes as there are a few unknown graves in the area. While Leonard is recorded as dying in Taunton in 1974 if a headstone was not placed by the family it is possible that the exact location could be overgrown and 'lost' once the grave position passes beyond personal recollection. I have so far discovered several examples of such cases.

The circa 1980 churchyard plan that I am using as a template for the survey is much written on and the name Stace does not appear, this could just be an oversight.

The Register of Deaths for Creech St Michael in the 1970's will be held in the Somerset Heritage Centre and the family should take what paper records they do have, birth, marriage and death certificates to the centre and ask for the parish records of that era. They can carry out a search and armed with this information, his granddaughter(?) might be able to get a possible location, which was usually written in the register. If it was a cremation that opens up other possibilities.

This is as much as I can do with the limited information given so far. I hope that it will enable you to take things further.

Regards
