Hi Nancy,

You may have already spotted the picture of the 'White Horse Inn' in our gallery on this website, look in albums to the 'Ham' section. As far as I know the photo is undated. The dresses and male attire might be a clue for an expert.

The house still exists but was a private home even when I lived in the little hamlet in the 1940's and 1950's. The roof is now tiled but the stone steps that the person is sitting on in the right of the picture are there to this day.

As to Thomas Hector – not sure where you got the name – your family history I suppose. But I can confirm that he is listed in the 'Morris' Directory of Somerset and Bristol of 1872' as the innkeeper of the White Horse Inn at Ham. He may not have owned the pub, as in 1871 a different landlord is listed.

I am doing a complete survey of our local churchyard (40% done) and as yet have not discovered any Hectors.

You may also be able to get more information about the family from the UK census's previous to 1872 (1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881) and baptism, marriage and death registers.

Good hunting.

Was there a coach builder / carpenter in Creech around the turn of the century 2011-09-28 09:42:17
I am doing some research for a friend and need to find out if there was a coach builder/ carpenter in Creech around the turn of the century.  I have the name E Bishop and have established that there was an Ernest Bishop, born in Durston 1868/9 moved to Creech St Michael before the 1901 census. any help would be much appreciated.

Lynn,

Sorry I have taken a while to answer your query. Almost two years - I must try harder!
Ernest Bishop and his family never left Frog Lane in Durston. He is on both the 1901 and 1911 census's.
Where the confusion occurs is that both Creech and Durston are grouped together
for the purpose of enumeration.
I hope this may clear up the mystery for you. Of course you may have made the same discovery meanwhile
Happy family hunting

Hi Eleanor,

You may have already found out about clubs for your son. If not here are a few ideas.

The Scouts and Cubs have telephone contact numbers under 'organisations' on this website, give them a call. They may have more information to pass on.
Creech Rangers FC also have a page - try them - they are an adult team but may have knowledge about youth teams in the area, they practice at Heathfield Community School so they school website might be another avenue to explore.

Creech St Michael Primary did have a very successful football team a few years ago.

Sorry for the delay - good luck

Amy,

With a short notice before the 40th anniversary my thoughts are that the local art group (see their page on this website) may be your first place to try. They meet most Mondays and Thursdays. They work in all sorts of mediums and may have a pencil sketch that would be suitable. Their telephone numbers are on the web-page.

The Church magazine did have a sketch of the church on the front page and I have enquired but it is no longer available. I do not have other sources.

Good luck
