Information In Relation To John Stevens Cheryl Cox (nee Stevens) 2014-02-24 02:15:00
Could you please tell me if there is a genealogy society in Creech St.
Michael. I am a descendant of John Stevens born in Creech St. Michael about
1855 who migrated to Australia in the late 1800s. I am keen to discover any
information I can in relation to John Stevens.
Thankyou

Cheryl,

You don't say where you are based and what family history access you have but a quick sweep of the Creech census of 1861 shows a John Stevens aged 5 living with his family in the centre of the village where his father Francis is a blacksmith, he has six brothers and sisters.

The next record is in the 1871 census where John is employed as a mason but still living at home. The local mason was George Brass.

I cannot find him on the 1881 census ? did he emigrate before then?

You may already have all this information.

There are lists of ships which sailed to Australia and some of the Australian newspapers would have details of passengers arriving.

There is only one Stevens grave in the churchyard, Henry Stevens 1963 aged 72 so he may be a descendant.
If I can help further let me know.
