Red squirrel spotted in Creech 2012-07-31 21:49:17

Article submitted by Eric Chown, Web Publicity

Recently it was reported to me that a solitary red squirrel had been seen in the garden of a friend.  The area was between the railway line and Bull Street in Creech St. Michael.

Can anyone verify the presence of this often solitary creature?

According to the Forestry Commission website the native red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) are threatened by their larger American cousin grey squirrel.

Just to confuse the issue some 'grey' squirrels can have red fur down their backs.  From the illustrations I have seen the red squirrel has a white chest flash.

The sighting was just after several weeks of heavy rain so it might have been a grey squirrel gone rusty!

Were you on the canal towpath Saturday 28th July afternoon 2012-07-30 08:43:01

Police have issued an appeal for witnesses following an incident near Creech on Saturday 28th July afternoon.

A woman, aged 64, was walking along the tow path of the Taunton and Bridgwater canal, between Bathpool and Creech St Michael. She passed a man shortly after 2pm. In an unprovoked attack the female was assaulted by this man.

The victim received injuries to her neck and leg and was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital.

Police have described the suspect as a white man, 5ft 9ins – 5ft 10ins tall, of slim build, with a neatly kept dark brown beard, possibly glasses and wearing a blue or yellow coloured jacket or jumper with a hood.

He was also wearing long dark coloured trousers or jeans. His clothing is described as odd for the hot weather conditions.

An appeal for witnesses has been issued by police. They would like to hear from anyone who was near the canal in the Bathpool and Creech St Michael areas Saturday 28th July afternoon who may have seen the man or recognises him from his description.

Anyone able to help the police enquiries is asked to contact Taunton CID on the force number 101.

Women are reminded to be vigilant and be aware of their own personal safety and try to avoid secluded and quiet areas.

Help required. Can you give a dog a good home 2012-07-24 08:41:39

St Giles Kennels and Dogs 4 Adoption is currently home to around 65 unwanted stray dogs!

These dogs come in via dog wardens and (if not claimed by their owners) go up for adoption. Sadly, more and more dogs are being dumped because the rescue centres are just too full!

And it’s not just Staffie’s!!!! We have all breeds, from Westie’s and Chihuahua’s right up to Great Danes and Deerhounds (and everything in between!)

We urgently need more people to come forward who could offer a forever home to one of our dogs! Or even foster a dog that isn’t doing well in kennels until it finds a new home!

We also regularly need donations of bedding and food! Or maybe you could come and walk a few dogs or spend some time in our cattery, cat cuddling!

Please contact us if you would like to help!!!!

Improvements at Ham Sewage Treatment works 2012-07-23 10:01:08

Article submitted by Wessex Water

Wessex Water is investing around £20m at Taunton (Ham) sewage treatment works to improve facilities to treat both wastewater and sludge.

The improvements, which have been under way for some years, are scheduled to finish by the end of March 2015.

The next phase will involve the provision of improved treatment facilities for the wastewater arriving at the works.

Until Wessex Water can provide an alternative route it will be transporting plant and materials via the normal access routes used by operational vehicles.

The company has established a traffic management plan to minimise disruption and ensure residents are affected as little as possible.

Arrangements to manage deliveries and traffic movements include:

  • limiting movements during peak hours
  • adherence to strict speed limits
  • use of designated passing places
  • specific instructions regarding the route to the works.

Work will start on site in August 2012 and be substantially completed by December 2014.

An exhibition about the next phase will be held at Creech St Michael Village Hall on 25th July, between 5pm and 8pm.

Summary of July 2012 Parish Council meeting 2012-07-03 16:37:49

Article submitted by Eric Chown, Web Publicity

The following information updates were announced at the Parish Council meeting held on 2nd July.

Allotments

A site for the proposed allotments has been found at Creech Heathfield. Arrangements and agreements are being drawn up and those concerned hope to be able to give firm dates soon.

Another set-back to the proposals for the remodelling of the recreation field.

Monies have set aside but Taunton Deane Borough Council (TDBC) are now asking that the whole project be put through "European Union Tender" creating further delays.  The tendering will have to be undertaken to ensure that the best value is ascertained. The councillors expressed their disappointment that the work planned would be unlikely to take place this summer.

New Medical Centre.

Dave Durdan announced that the new doctor's surgery is due to open on Monday the 6th of August.  The centre will have a 'Open Afternoon' on the following Saturday the 11th of August between 2 and 4pm.

Parishioners are invited to come and explore the new facilities on offer.  The old surgery will possibly be used fully by the Blood Transfusion Service.
