Police Be Alert Message Adrian Birch 2014-03-21 11:15:10
Over the past couple of days there have been several reports of fraud
occurring, predominantly in the North Somerset area but it is possible that
this will occur in other parts of Somerset.
Essentially retired persons appear to be targeted with a phone call. The
caller purports to be from the police and indicates there has been a problem
with the use of their bank card. The caller asks the victim to call them
back and gives a number. The end result of this is that a number of people
have so far been conned out of several thousand pounds - each.
Police are investigating this matter however your assistance is also
(a) to encourage anyone subject of such a matter in the last few days to
contact the police immediately - using the 101 number.
(b) to encourage residents receiving an unsolicited call from someone
alleging to be from the police to take care. If they ask you to call them
back on a number please do not do so. The number for the Avon and Somerset
Constabulary switchboard is 101 and this is the number that should be used
if anyone is subject of this type of telephone call.
If you have information about any crime, phone the police on 101 or you can
call anonymously to the independent charity CRIMESTOPPERS 0800 555 111. For

Bargain Bus Ride Adrian Birch 2014-03-13 19:42:24

Am I the last one to discover that the Henlade (Gateway) Park and Ride is very good value?

We usually take two grand-daughters into Taunton with all the necessary equipment and push-chairs and have in the past struggled on the number 27, which can be quite a trial on this very busy bus route. Having just been told that the park and ride service was cheaper between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm. we decided to look at this option.

Parking (free) at Henlade after a short wait the FLY bus took us (two adults – two children) into Taunton for the grand sum of £1.50 return, much less than a couple of hours in the often crowded car-parks. No hassle about space and a quick and easy drop off and pickup in the town centre.

We were able to do all our shopping plus coffee and lunch without forever looking at the time for the return journey. The bus frequency was a real boon at about every 12 minutes. So if you can do your shopping etc. between 10 and 4 go for it. We do hold bus passes but these are not valid on the park and ride (shame Taunton).

This low cost and convenient service deserves to be advertised more and I for one am happy to pass this on.  I understand that the £1.50 return fare is for up to five adults (one car load) between the hours of 10am and 4 pm. Monday to Friday.

With the town becoming more crowded as summer approaches this is well worth trying.
